S-H boys suffer tough lossNathan Hibbard
The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys basketball team traveled to Calico Rock Friday night and dropped a hard-fought game to the Pirates 62-53.
The game was close from the start, with Calico Rock leading 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, 27-26 at halftime and 45-42 after three periods.
"The last four minutes of the game was the difference," said Sloan-Hendrix coach Ricky Grisham. "We had a couple of players in foul trouble, and Calico did a great job of attacking them for easy baskets."
The Pirates hit 11-of-14 free throws down the stretch to maintain their lead.
"We had to gamble and do some fouling, and Calico did a great job of hitting their free throws," added Grisham. "We are closer to putting together four solid quarters. When we do, we'll win the close ones."
Tyler Gillean led the Greyhounds with 17 points, while Chase DeJournett added 15. Daniel Rowsey scored 11 points, and Lucas Conrad had six. Zach Brown and Steven Ward each had two points.
The Greyhounds scored the game's first 13 points en route to defeating White County Central 64-46 on Oct. 26 at Imboden.
Sloan-Hendrix led 19-6 after one quarter, 32-23 at halftime and 47-35 after three quarters.
"Defensively, it was our best effort this young season. We did a good job of keeping the ball out of the lane and did a great job help side with their 6'6" player," said Grisham. "Offensively we shared the ball. Tyler did a great job getting to the rim, while Chase and Daniel knocked down five three-pointers in the first half to get us rolling."
Gillean finished with 25 points. Rowsey had 13, and DeJournett added 11. Brown scored six points. Conrad had four points, and Ward had two.
The Sloan-Hendrix junior high boys fell to Izard County Consolidated 34-24 on Oct. 25 at Imboden.
The junior Hounds trailed 17-6 at halftime, but outscored ICC 11-2 in the third period to close to within 19-17 after three periods. The Cougars were able to pull away in the fourth quarter for the win.
Brandon Stone led Sloan-Hendrix with 10 points. Skylar Morris had five points, and Kyle Murphy scored three. Keith Saylors and Chase King each added two points. Toby Lee and Joseph Haines scored one point apiece.
ICC won a junior B game 28-12.
