Westside was unable to slow down Walnut Ridge's ground game, as the Bobcats rolled over the Warriors 40-12 in front of a homecoming crowd Friday night at Sexton Field.

Walnut Ridge jumped to an early lead when Preston Matthews capped the Cats' opening drive with a one-yard run. Richie Ward kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After forcing a Westside punt, Teague Phillips put Walnut Ridge ahead 13-0 with a three-yard run with 3:27 to play in the opening period.

Westside trimmed the Bobcats' lead to 13-6 on Brad House's two-yard touchdown with 4:52 to play in the second quarter.

Walnut Ridge responded with their own scoring drive, capped by Eric Wilcoxson's nine-yard run with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Ward added the PAT, and the Cats carried a 20-6 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Bobcats scored the only points of the third quarter when Phillips found the end zone from six yards out late in the period. Ward added the extra point for a 27-6 Walnut Ridge lead.

House kept Westside in the game with a nine-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 27-12.

Phillips set up Walnut Ridge's next score with a 50-yard bolt on the Cats' next possession. Payton Poole capped the drive on a quarterback keeper to extend the Bobcats' lead to 33-12 with 8:46 to play in the game.

Hunter Yates scored Walnut Ridge's final touchdown on a seven-yard run with 3:18 to play. Ward's extra point set the final score.

Matthews led the Bobcats' ground attack with 137 yards on 13 carries. Phillips had 104 yards on 13 carries, and Wilcoxson finished with 97 yards on 10 attempts.

Matthews led the defense with 12 tackles, while Rowdy Ditto and Wilcoxson each recorded 11 stops. Ditto recovered a fumble, and Ward had an interception.

Walnut Ridge improved to 6-1 on the season with the win. The Bobcats have an open date this week before hosting Cross County on Oct. 29.
