Sebastian Irvin passed for three first-half touchdowns and Tyler Clement ran for three scores in the second half to lead Hoxie to a 46-18 rout over the Manila Lions in 3A-3 conference football action Friday night at Crider Field.
The Lions got on the board first when Dillon Burrow tossed a six-yard scoring pass to Brian Borden, giving Manila a 6-0 lead with 3:52 to play in the first quarter.
Hoxie wasted little time responding, as Irvin connected with Cody Treadaway for a 61-yard touchdown on the Mustangs ensuing possession. Lucas Hoffstead kicked the extra point for a 7-6 Hoxie lead with 3:08 left in the opening period.
The score remained 7-6 until the Mustangs struck for two quick scores in the final minutes of the half. Tyler Hall pulled in a 45-yard scoring reception and Hoffstead added the PAT to increase the Hoxie advantage to 14-6 with 1:52 to play in the first half.
The Mustang defense then held Manila on downs to get the ball back. Hoxie took advantage of the good field position, as Irvin found Kenny Mashburn with a 31-yard touchdown pass with just 1:11 to play in the half. Hoffstead's third extra point gave the Mustangs a 21-6 lead heading into halftime.
Hoxie continued to pull away in the second half. Tyler Clement scored on a seven-yard run early in the third quarter. Later in the period, Mashburn found the end zone on a 13-yard run, as the Mustangs extended their advantage to 33-6.
Manila made the score 33-12 on Burrow's 61-yard pass to Shane Lee late in the third quarter.
Hoxie's offense continued to roll in the fourth quarter, as Clement added two more touchdowns on runs of 14 and 20 yards, putting the Mustangs ahead 46-12.
Burrow's four-yard run in the final minute set the final score.
Irvin finished with three completions (each for a touchdown) in six attempts for 137 yards.
Mashburn led the Hoxie ground game with 92 yards on nine carries. Irvin added 80 yards on seven carries. Clement carried 16 times for 54 yards. Treadaway had 33 yards on seven attempts, and Garret Hart rushed three times for 18 yards.
With the win, Hoxie improved to 3-1 in conference play and 4-3 overall. The Mustangs travel to Harrisburg on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
