
Suspicious fires raise questions

A firefighter helps battle a blaze last Wednesday morning on Ringle Street in Hoxie. The house, which was abandoned, was a total loss. The fire is under investigation.

Farmers burning off their fields are not the only reason for all the smoke in the air around Walnut Ridge and Hoxie. Structure fires are adding to the haze, and some of the fires may not be accidental.
Since October 1, the Hoxie Fire Department has fought four structure fires, all in the Southeast side of town. Most of the homes and buildings were vacant and without power or gas running to any of them.

WR City Council renews
Firemen's Pension millage
The Walnut Ridge City Council voted unanimously to renew a one-mill tax designated for the Firemen's Pension Fund. An ordinance for the millage was passed in 1979 and has to be voted on for renewal each year. The tax is included in the real and personal property taxes within the city for the purpose of paying pensions to retired firemen and widows and minor children of deceased firemen.

Hoxie membership
in authority extended
Don King presented a request for the Hoxie City Council to approve entity dues for the NEA Intermodal Facilities Authority for 2011. Dues have been reduced to $11,428 because of Clay County joining Lawrence and Randolph counties, Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Hoxie and Corning in the authority.

WR man dies in accident
A Walnut Ridge man was fatally injured on Friday morning when the tractor-trailer he was driving was involved in a one-vehicle accident in Missouri.

Peanuts could make comeback in Arkansas
According to Mary Hightower of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, more than one million acres of peanuts were grown in Arkansas in 1915. Now only an estimated 1,000 acres of peanuts are planted in the state, with more than 500 planted in Lawrence County.
