Mustangs win conference opener

The Hoxie Mustangs defeated Piggott 28-12 Friday night at Crider Field in the 3A-3 conference opener for both teams.

Sebastian Irvin scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 29-yard run in the final minute of the first quarter. Irvin kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Hoxie lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Kenny Mashburn broke a 40-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs. Irvin's extra point put Hoxie in front 14-0.

Piggott cut Hoxie's lead to 14-6 on Alek Samples' six-yard run with 3:48 to play in the quarter.

Irvin scored on a 10-yard run with 1:02 to play in the half. He added the PAT, and the Mustangs went to halftime with a 21-6 lead.

Piggott struck again early in the third quarter, as Cody Mantz scored on a 40-yard run with 6:45 to play in the period.

Hoxie put the game away on their next possession when Irvin ran for a 27-yard touchdown with 7:41 to play in the third quarter. Cody Treadaway kicked the extra point to set the final score, as neither team would score the rest of the way.

Irvin finished with 223 yard on 26 carries. He also completed two-of-four passes, for 34 yards. Mashburn added 63 yards rushing on four carries. Tyler Clement rushed 13 times for 51 yards. Treadaway had one carry for six yards.

Hunter Flippo caught one pass for 21 yards, and Tyler Hall had a 13-yard reception.

Defensively, Joe Gage led the Mustangs with 18 tackles, while Mashburn recorded 17. Thomas Kingsland had 15 tackles, recovered a fumble and caused a fumble. Zach Rogers made 13 tackles. Irvin had 13 tackles and an interception. Hall had 11 tackles.

Hoxie improved to 2-2 overall on the season. The Mustangs travel to Corning on Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
