The Walnut Ridge Bobcats got back on the winning track Friday night, with an 18-0 whitewashing of the McCrory Jaguars at Sexton Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Walnut Ridge found the end zone twice in the second period. Quarterback Payton Poole connected with Eric Wilcoxson on a 70-yard pass play to set up the Bobcats' first score. Preston Matthews scored on a two-yard run to give Walnut Ridge a 6-0 lead with 7:32 to play before halftime.
The Bobcat defense then held McCroy, but a Jaguar punt pinned Walnut Ridge deep in the Cats' own territory. Walnut Ridge proceeded to drive the length of the field, with Wilcoxson capping the drive with a six-yard run with 27 seconds remaining in the half. The conversion was no good and the Bobcats took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
Matthews returned the second-half kickoff to inside the McCrory 20-yard line to set up the Cats' next score. Teague Phillips scored on a six-yard run with 10:32 to play in the third quarter for the game's final points.
The Walnut Ridge defense kept the Jaguars off the scoreboard to record their third shutout in four games this season.
Poole completed 13-of-15 passes, for 176 yards.
Phillips led Walnut Ridge in rushing, with 49 yards on eight carries.
Matthews led the defense with 17 tackles and an interception. Wilcoxson had 15 tackles, and Shawn Seagraves had an interception.
Walnut Ridge is now 2-1 in 2A-3 conference play and 3-1 overall. The Bobcats travel to Salem on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
