Mustangs struggle
against Highland

Sterling Stowers passed for four touchdowns and ran for another, and the Highland Rebels pulled away in the second half to defeat the Hoxie Mustangs 38-15 Friday night at Highland.

Highland got on the scoreboard first when Stowers passed nine yards to Ben Markway with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter. Ethan Hoppe kicked the extra point.

An interception by Hunter Flippo set up Sebastian Irvin's 27-yard touchdown pass to Cody Treadaway. Treadaway added the extra point for a 7-7 tie with 1:13 to play in the opening period.

Stowers put the Rebels back on top with a 40-yard pass to Michael Copeland early in the second quarter. Hoppe's PAT gave Highland a 14-7 advantage.

Irvin scored on a two-yard run for Hoxie. Garrett Hart then passed to Irvin for the two-point conversion, giving the Mustangs a 15-14 lead with 6:53 to play in the first half.

Highland regained the lead on Stowers' third scoring pass of the evening, an 18-yard strike to Will Edmondson with just over a minute to play before halftime. The conversion failed and the Rebels carried a 20-15 lead into intermission.

The second half belonged to the Rebels, as they outscored Hoxie 18-0 to secure the win.

Stowers put Highland ahead 26-15 with a 12-yard pass to Garrett Sublett midway through the third quarter. Scott Gatewood added a two-yard run to stretch the Rebels' lead to 32-15 with 2:25 to play in the period.

Stowers closed the scoring with a 43-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

For Hoxie, Irvin finished with 164 yards on 17 carries. Kenny Mashburn added 26 yards on four carries, and Tyler Clement had 11 yards on eight attempts.

Irvin completed seven-of-20 passes for 119 yards.

The Mustangs fell to 1-2 overall and will open 3A-3 conference play on Friday when they host the Piggott Mohawks at Crider Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday is also Peewee Night.
