FIRE DESTROYS SHOP ~ Firefighters work to extinguish a blaze that destroyed the main building at Franks Body Shop, located at 2113 Highway 63B in Hoxie, Monday night. The fire was reported at 9:15 p.m., and Hoxie, Walnut Ridge, Portia and Sedgwick fire departments responded. The office portion of the building was saved, but the shop and seven vehicles that were inside it were a total loss. Owner Kenny Franks said he does plan to rebuild, and the body shop will remain open operating out of other buildings at the same location, as well as Franks Glass Shop in Walnut Ridge.

Roby, Gill win school board races

School elections were held Tuesday in Arkansas, and in Lawrence County. Two school board positions in the Lawrence County School District (Walnut Ridge and Black Rock) had contested races. Despite each race having three candidates, no runoff is expected.

HFD preparing for
annual open house

At the Sept. 14 Hoxie City Council meeting, Assistant Fire Chief Billy Blair announced plans for the Sixth Annual Hoxie Fire Department Open House and Safety Awareness Day.

Tax not part of planning
for proposed golf course

"This golf course will not be funded by a tax," Walnut Ridge Alderman Michael "Button" Wallin said at the city council meeting on Sept. 14, speaking of a proposed municipal golf course the city hopes to build. "It will be funded by donations and volunteers, and it will be for the entire community, county and our schools."

Watson is candidate for mayor

Christie Watson is a candidate for the office of Hoxie mayor. In a statement to The TD she stated the following:

Accident claims life

A one-vehicle accident claimed the life of a Ravenden woman, according to a preliminary fatal crash summary filed by Trooper Clinton Eubanks of the Arkansas State Police.
