Hoxie falls to GCT

The Greene County Tech Golden Eagles flew into Hoxie and defeated the Mustangs 48-20 in senior high football on Friday.

Hoxie jumped on top early, when Tyler Clement scored on a five-yard run with 6:52 to play in the first quarter. Cody Treadaway added the extra point for a 7-0 Mustang lead.

The Eagles responded on their ensuing drive when quarterback Clayton Davis passed four yards to Nathan Summitt for a touchdown with 4:44 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following a Hoxie turnover, Davis connected with Wes Copeland for a 36-yard score. The PAT gave Greene County Tech a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period.

The Eagles took a 21-7 lead on a touchdown by Davis early in the second quarter. Hoxie cut into Tech's advantage on Clement's second touchdown, a two-yard run with 2:58 to play in the quarter. Treadaway's extra point brought the Mustangs to within 21-14 at halftime.

Greene County Tech took control of the game with two quick touchdowns in the third quarter. A 37-yard run by Brian Griffith put the Eagles up 28-14 with 9:40 to play. Davis then passed 45-yards to Ryan Maxwell for a score, giving the Eagles a 34-14 lead with 7:58 to play in the period.

The Mustangs wouldn't go away, however. Sebastian Irvin scored on an 11-yard run to bring Hoxie to within 34-20 after three quarters.

Tech dashed the Mustangs' comeback hopes with two scores in the fourth quarter. Griffith scored on a four-yard run midway through the period. Travis Ryan closed the scoring on an 84-yard run with 2:50 to play in the game.

Irvin led the Mustangs offense, rushing for 149 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. He also completed eight-of-19 passes for 76 yards.

Clement finished with nine yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts. Treadaway carried twice for 16 yards, and Kenny Mashburn added eight yards on three carries.

Hunter Flippo, Tyler Hall and Joe Gage each had two receptions. Treadaway, Mashburn and Irvin each caught one pass.

The Mustangs will take to the road this week to face the Highland Rebels on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
