WR blanks CorningNathan Hibbard
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2010 season with a dominating 38-0 shutout victory at Corning Friday night.
Walnut Ridge's first drive stalled, and the Cats punted to Corning. On Corning's second play, Dylan Wills forced a fumble, which was scooped up by Walnut Ridge's Preston Matthews, who returned it 46 yards for a touchdown. Payton Poole passed to Richie Ward for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 Walnut Ridge lead.
Walnut Ridge then drove inside Corning's 10-yard line before losing a fumble at the end of the first period.
At the start of the second quarter, Shawn Seagraves intercepted a Corning pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. The two-point attempt failed, leaving Walnut Ridge with a 14-0 lead. Later in the period, Matthews scored on an eight-yard run with 2:50 remaining in the period. Poole again passed to Ward for the two-point conversion, as Walnut Ridge took a 22-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Walnut Ridge put the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Poole scored on a three-yard quarterback keeper, and Matthews added his third touchdown of the evening, this time on a 25-yard run. Both two-point conversion attempts were successful to set the final score.
The mercy rule was in effect for the fourth quarter.
Teague Phillips led Walnut Ridge in rushing with 66 yards, while Matthews added 64.
Poole completed 16-of-23 passes for 132 yards.
Defensively, Dallin Ginn, Hunter Yates and Wills led with six tackles each. Ginn had three tackles for loss, and a sack. Yates broke up three passes.
Walnut Ridge will host Cedar Ridge in the conference opener Friday night at Sexton Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
