Hillcrest High School student Joshua Shaw works on a project during the Engineering Summer Academy at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Joshua Shaw of Strawberry recently attended the Engineering Summer Academy at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
The program is a one-week residential engineering academy for high school students who want to explore a specific area of engineering. Shaw participated in hands-on activities in cutting-edge labs while working alongside engineering faculty and current engineering students.
Shaw enrolled in the mechanical engineering portion of the program. These students were responsible for the design, the propulsion, the steering and hull dynamics of a 32Ó solar-powered boat.
His team collaborated with a team of electrical engineering students who provided the solar panels, charging components and electric servos. The week culminated as five sets of teams raced the solar-powered boats that they had designed and built while attending the Engineering Summer Academy.
Shaw is a junior at Hillcrest High School in Strawberry and plans to pursue a career in engineering. He is the son of Leonard and Yota Shaw of Strawberry.
