Gov. Mike Beebe visits WR

Gov. Mike Beebe visits last Wednesday with reporters at The Times Dispatch.

"This area's greatest strength is its people," Governor Mike Beebe said in an interview at The Times Dispatch last Wednesday with reporters from The TD and the Pocahontas Star Herald. He was in Walnut Ridge to attend an evening fund-raiser in his honor.

"The people have strong ties to each other and to their towns. I grew up in Jackson County, so I'm familiar with these ties and hopes for the future of this area."

Another strength he spoke of is the transportation infrastructure in Northeast Arkansas, which he said is getting better and getting closer to reaching the Missouri state line.

Haskins wins photo contest

Paula Haskins of Walnut Ridge is the best of show winner in this year's Times Dispatch Summertime Photo Contest with a photo that also took first place in the Summer Scenes category.

WR City Council discusses
parking, possible golf course

The Walnut Ridge City Council held a special meeting on Aug. 3 to discuss parking areas for Stewart Park and the possibility of building a municipal golf course near the former Walnut Ridge Country Club building.

County expecting FEMA funds soon

During Monday's Quorum Court meeting, Lawrence County Judge Alex Latham informed court members that the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster money from 2009 should be forthcoming within a month.
