SPLASHES AROUND ~ Gabriella Scott, one, splashes around in an inflatable pool on Monday trying to beat the summer heat. Temperatures reached as high as 97 on Monday and mid 90s on Tuesday with a heat index around 104 degrees. Scott is the daughter of Jonathan and Leigh Scott of Walnut Ridge.

Club to close as ordered

Members of the Walnut Ridge County Club and Golf Club learned that they must vacate their premises no later than midnight on Sunday at the Walnut Ridge Airport Commissioners meeting on Monday night.

state BPW president

Diana Shelton of Walnut Ridge was installed as president of the Arkansas Business and Professional Women during the organization's 91st State Convention held June 4-6 at Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock.

Hoxie hopes to lower fire rating

Dewey Scott addressed the Hoxie City Council meeting on June 8 about efforts to lower the ISO rating in the city. In 2007, Hoxie's ISO rating went from a level 7 to a 6. Efforts now are aimed at eventually lowering the rating to a level 3.

Sale of K2 to be
prohibited in WR

Walnut Ridge City Councilmen banned the use of "Spice" or "K2" within the city limits, established rules and regulations for those selling produce during Farmers' Market hours and approved a land swap between Williams Baptist College and the Walnut Ridge Airport during their meeting on June 8.

Investigation reopened
in Smithville boy's death

The investigation into the shooting death of an 11-year-old Smithville boy was reopened after his brother confessed to a family member that he was the one who fired the gun, according to Captain Jody Dotson of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.
