Screamin' Eagles earn runner-up
spot in hard-fought regional final
The Viola Longhorns outlasted Hillcrest 5-4 in 15 innings in the title game of the 1A Region 2 Baseball Tournament on May 11 at Brockwell.
The game was tied 1-1 when Hillcrest pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the seventh before Viola tied the game with three runs in bottom of the inning.
The teams played seven scoreless innings before Viola's Jacob Luther reached on a throwing error. Jacob Payne then drew a walk to put runners at first and second. On a 1-0 count, Dillon Holstine hit a towering fly ball that was misplayed by the leftfielder, allowing Luther to score the winning run from second.
Derek Wooten batted 4-for-6 and scored a run, while Billy Brannon had three hits and two RBIs for the Screamin' Eagles. Clay Howard finished with two hits, while Dylan Wooten, Kyle Bristow and Hunter Durham each had one hit.
Derek Wooten started on the mound for Hillcrest and pitched the first eight innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and registering a dozen strikeouts. Dylan Wooten pitched the final six and two-thirds innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and striking out nine.
Hillcrest held of a late rally by the tourney's host team, Izard County Consolidated, to post a 9-7 victory in the semifinals on May 8.
The Eagles started fast, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding single runs in the third and fourth innings. Hillcrest threatened to end the game via the run rule with a five-run fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Cougars fought back, scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning, then plating six runs in their final at-bat before the Eagles recorded the final out.
Starting pitcher Derek Wooten surrendered just two hits while ringing up 12 strikeouts in six innings of work. Dylan Wooten pitched the final inning, giving up six runs on two hits with a strikeout.
At the plate, Dylan Wooten had three hits and three RBIs. Derek Wooten had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Durham had two hits and one RBI. Trevor Morgan, Hunter Nunnally, Cameron Vaulner, Bristow and Howard each had one hit.
The Screamin' Eagles opened the tournament by hammering Shirley 16-6 on May 7.
Dylan Wooten batted 3-for-3 and drove in five runs to lead Hillcrest at the plate. Also for the Eagles, Kyle Bristow went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Derek Wooten and Durham each drove in a pair of runs. Tyler Parker had a hit and scored twice, and Logan Spray had a hit and scored one run.
Dylan Wooten started on the mound and allowed two earned runs on two hits and recorded four strikeouts.
