WR, Hillcrest compete
in state baseball tourneys
The baseball teams at Walnut Ridge and Hillcrest High Schools competed in their respective state tournaments last week. Each team won its opening game on Friday before having their seasons end with losses in Saturday's second-round action.
2A State Tournament
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats advanced to the second round of the 2A State Baseball Tournament before falling to Woodlawn 5-4 on Saturday at Norphlet.
Bennett Dudley gave the Bobcats an early lead with a two-run double scoring Curtis Jackson and Logan Gaither. Dudley then scored on Chris Dickson's single, giving the Cats a 3-0 advantage in the first inning.
Woodlawn fought back to tie the game with two runs in the third and one in the fifth.
Walnut Ridge regained the lead at 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning when Dudley doubled and later scored on an error.
Woodlawn responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two-out, two-run single put the Bears ahead for good.
Dudley finished with three hits and two RBIs. He also took the pitching loss, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Walnut Ridge finished the season with a 28-8 record.
Walnut Ridge opened tournament play by pounding Abundant Life 15-5 on Friday.
Jackson pitched all six innings to earn the win. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and registered three strikeouts.
Offensively for the Bobcats, Eric Wilcoxson went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs. Dickson also batted 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Zach Carson and Heath Kennedy had two hits apiece.
1A State Tournament
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles advanced to the 1A State Tournament held at Pine Bluff.
The Eagles edged Poyen 4-3 on Friday, then fell to West Side Greers Ferry 5-2 on Saturday.
