Cats are regional runners-upNathan HibbardStaff Writer The host Marked Tree Indians defeated the Walnut Ridge Bobcats 5-1 in the championship game of the 2A North Regional Baseball Tournament on May 11. Walnut Ridge took an early 1-0 lead before the Indians tied the game in the second. Marked Tree took the lead with a run in the third inning, added two more in the fourth and one in the sixth. Marked Tree pitcher Richie Tate allowed the Bobcats one run on just three hits and finished with 14 strikeouts. He retired 21 consecutive batters to end the game. Bennett Dudley took the pitching loss for the Cats.
Walnut Ridge routed Marmaduke 11-1 in the regional semifinals on May 8. Tyler Dickson was the winning pitcher, limiting the Greyhounds to one run on just two hits and registering four strikeouts in four innings of work. Dudley was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Teague Phillips and Logan Gaither each went 3-for-4, and Curtis Jackson added two hits.
The Bobcats opened regional play by defeating Buffalo Island Central 4-2 on May 7. Dudley pitched the final three innings to earn the win. He allowed one hit and struck out four in relief of Jackson. Zach Carson led Walnut Ridge's offense, going 3-for-3, including a pair doubles, with two RBIs.
