Hillcrest softball season
ends with loss at state
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles saw their softball season end with a 13-0 loss to the Taylor Lady Tigers in the first round of the Class 1A State Tournament on Friday at Viola.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when defensive errors began to mount for the Lady Eagles. Taylor scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead, thanks in part to four Hillcrest errors in the three-inning stretch. The Lady Tigers put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning.
Miranda Doyle had Hillcrest's only base hit of the game. Stevie Howard reached base twice and had a stolen base.
Samantha Blevins pitched all seven innings for Hillcrest, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and recording 10 strikeouts.
"Our offense and defense both struggled. Taylor is the best team we've played this season," said Hillcrest head coach Shawn Rose.
The Lady Screamin' Eagles finished the season with a 20-9 record and qualified for the state tournament for the fourth time in six years.
