WR receives grants, loans

The City of Walnut Ridge has received several grants and loans that will assist with the expansion of sewer services and extensive drainage work.

At their city council meeting on May 11, aldermen learned that the city has received a $120,000 USDA loan as well as a $120,000 USDA Grant and a $796,000 Natural Resource Grant. The money will be used to extend the city sewer lines to approximately 35 residents who live near the Luther Bridge Road, part of Midway and Highway 34, as well as to the bypass area near SouthPoint Tiger Express.

"This is basically a $1 million project, and the city's obligation will be $120,000," Rogers said. "We worked hard for this and are very pleased to have received it."

The city also received a $128,000 AEDC Grant for drainage work.

"Two projects will be covered by this grant," Rogers said. "One project is at Walnut and Northwest Seventh streets and the second is on Elm Street. The grant will cover new construction, new culverts, roadside ditches, cross drain replacements and outfall ditches."

The city will have to go through the bidding process, but Rogers said she expects the projects to begin sometime this summer or by summer's end.
