Hillcrest girls are district champsNathan Hibbard
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles captured the championship of the 1A-2 East District Softball Tournament with a pair of wins on April 29 at Brockwell.
In the finals, Hillcrest defeated host Izard County Consolidated 13-4.
The game was close in the early innings, with ICC holding a 3-2 lead after two innings. The Lady Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the third to move ahead 4-3.
After each team scored a run in the fourth inning, Hillcrest broke the game open with a five-run fifth, which included a two-run homer by Kayla McBride, for a 10-4 advantage. The Lady Eagles added three runs in the sixth inning to set the final score.
Samantha Blevins earned the win from the pitching circle, allowing two earned runs on five hits while registering six strikeouts.
Offensively for the Lady Eagles, Miranda Doyle had two hits, two stolen bases and scored two runs. Blevins had two RBIs, and Stevie Howard scored twice. Lindsey Crews reached base on all four plate appearances and scored four runs. Sarah Saffell had two RBIs, and Elaina Pankey reached safely all four at-bats.
Hillcrest advanced to the title game with 17-2 run-ruled victory over the Black Rock Lady Zebras earlier in the day.
The Lady Eagles were in command from the outset, plating 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hillcrest added three runs in the second inning, one in the third and three in the fourth.
Black Rock scored two runs in the third.
Blevins pitched the win, giving up one earned run on one hit and striking out eight. Doyle, Natalie Johnson, Blevins, McBride, Kellie Beasley, Howard and Crews each had multiple hits.
McBride collected four RBIs, Beasley three, and Crews and Blevins had two apiece.
