Cats earn baseball victoriesNathan HibbardStaff Writer The Walnut Ridge Bobcats baseball team defeated Salem 9-4 on Thursday at Salem to complete a perfect 12-0 season in 2A-2 conference play. It marks the third consecutive season the Bobcats have gone undefeated in conference play. Zach Carson earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five in six innings of work. Eric Wilcoxson, Logan Gaither, Bennett Dudley and Carson each had two hits for the Bobcats. Walnut Ridge improved to 23-6 overall with the win.
Walnut Ridge also defeated Salem earlier in the week, posting an 11-1 win over the Greyhounds on April 20 at Stewart Park. Curtis Jackson allowed the Greyhounds one run on four hits, while registering six strikeouts to earn the pitching win. At the plate, Jackson batted 2-for-3 and had two RBIs. Gaither, Wilcoxson and Heath Kennedy each scored a pair of runs.
Walnut Ridge shut out the Melbourne Bearkatz 14-0 on April 19 at Melbourne. Gaither was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate, which included a pair of doubles, and scored four runs for the Cats. Carson finished with two hits. Teague Phillips was the winning pitcher, allowing the Bearkatz just three hits, while registering six strikeouts in the five-inning game.
