Accidents claim
lives of residents

Two one-vehicle accidents over the past week resulted in the deaths of Lawrence County residents, Jerry Dewayne McLauglin, 52, of Hoxie and Cody Joe Johnson, 17, of Strawberry.

McLaughlin was killed when the 2006 Mack gravel truck he was driving on Highway 412, west of Light, went through a guardrail and overturned in the ditch.

According to Trooper Rocky Rapert of the Arkansas State Police, the accident occurred at approximately 1:09 p.m. on Thursday when the vehicle's right front tire blew causing the truck to go out of control and hit the guardrail.

McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene by Greene County Coroner Dick Pace.

Funeral services for McLaughlin were Monday afternoon at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Johnson was killed when the 2008 Pontiac he was driving northbound on Walnut Grove Road, seven mile west of Cord, went out of control, crossed the centerline and left the roadway. The vehicle then struck several trees and overturned several times.

According to Deputy Jeremy Qualls with the Independence County Sheriff's Department, the accident occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m. on Sunday.

Jeffery A. Simmer, 20, of Little Rock was also killed in the accident. Two other passengers, Alysha Sullins, 18 of Sulpher Rock, and Virginia Corter, 28, of Batesville, were taken to White River Medical Center in Batesville.

Funeral services for Johnson will be Friday morning at 10 at House-Gregg Funeral Home at Lynn.
