Hillcrest teams advance to state
The senior high basketball teams at Hillcrest and Black Rock competed in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament last week at Calico Rock.
The Hillcrest boys and girls teams each advanced to the semifinals and clinched berths in the 1A State Tournament, which Hillcrest will host.
After falling in Friday's semifinals, the Screamin' Eagles and Lady Screamin' Eagles played in consolation games on Saturday.
Hillcrest - RC boys
Ridgefield Christian defeated the Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles 62-49 in the consolation game of the boys bracket.
Ridgefield Christian led 17-9 after one quarter, 38-30 at halftime and 53-41 at the end of three periods.
Derek Wooten led the Eagles with 21 points, while Trevor Morgan added 19.
The Bay Lady Yellowjackets defeated Hillcrest 61-42 in the girls consolation game.
Natalie Johnson scored 13 points, while Tamara Evans and Samantha Blevins each added nine points for the Lady Eagles.
Calico Rock - Hillcrest girls
Host Calico Rock slipped past Hillcrest 51-50 in a girls semifinal game.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles fought back the remainder of the game and trailed only 28-24 at halftime. Calico Rock extended its lead to 41-35 in the third period and held off Hillcrest's attempt at a fourth-quarter comeback.
Johnson led Hillcrest with a game-high 26 points. Evans scored 11 points, and Blevins added eight.
Bay defeated Hillcrest 58-31 in a boys semifinal contest.
Hillcrest - BR boys
Hillcrest defeated Black Rock 48-32 in a first-round game on Thursday.
Black Rock led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles came back in the second period to take a 26-22 halftime lead.
Hillcrest extended their lead in the second half, taking a 36-26 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Morgan led Hillcrest with 24 points, and Derek Wooten scored 13. Zach Doyle had seven points, and Logan Spray added four.
Khris Foster scored nine points for Black Rock.
Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles went to overtime to defeat Crowley's Ridge Academy 66-60.
Evans led the Lady Eagles with 19 points. Johnson had 14 points, and Blevins added 11.
BR - Calico Rock girls
Calico Rock eliminated the Black Rock Lady Zebras 74-41 in a first-round game on Feb. 24.
Teri Aden led the Lady Zebras with 16 points, while Amy Galbreath added 13.
