Hillcrest to host state
1A basketball tourney
Hillcrest School is hosting this year's Class 1A State Basketball Tournament with games scheduled to kick off on Tuesday.
The bracket for the tournament is expected to be complete on Sunday after the last regional tournament games are played on Saturday night.
Supt. Greg Crabtree said games will be played Tuesday through Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and continuing until the final game each day at 8:30. Saturday's schedule will be different for semifinal action.
"On Saturday, there will be two sessions," Crabtree said. "We will be required to clear the gym and clean it in between."
The first session will begin at noon with a girls semifinal game and will feature a boys semifinal game at 1:30. The second session will feature a 6 p.m. girls semifinal game, followed by the other boys semifinal at 7:30.
The state tournament finals for each division will be held March 12 and 13 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
Crabtree said there is a lot involved in hosting a tournament, and he is grateful to those who have supported the school in this endeavor.
"We want to thank everyone ahead of time," he said. "This is a community effort. Our patrons, local businesses and businesses from the surrounding area have been very willing to help."
He said local churches will be providing desserts for the hospitality room, and several businesses have donated food and money. The school is also producing a tournament program that will feature advertisements purchased by supporters.
Crabtree said while this is the first time for Hillcrest School District to host a state tournament, Lynn School, one of two schools that consolidated to form the district, hosted the tournament the spring before the new district was formed.
"We're really excited about this," he said of hosting the tournament.
