Grandparents' Corner

Alex (from left), 14, Meridith, 10, and Aaron, 12, are the grandchildren of Leon and Juanita Helms of Smithville.

Alex Helms, son of Royce and Debbie Helms of Smithville, is also the grandson of Faye Flanigan of Kennett, Mo., and the late James Flanigan.

Meridith and Aaron Helms, children of Dr. Roger and Marla Helms of Smithville, are also the grandchildren of Beverly and Bill Lemmons of Noland and Ronald Ring of Smithville and the great-grandchildren of Virginia and Forrester Davis of Walnut Ridge.

Snow is
picnic after
ice storm

The freezing precipitation and snow that began Thursday night and continued through Friday is no doubt one of the biggest snows our area has seen in over 15 years and maybe much longer. On our patio table, we measured exactly seven inches, but some of that snow could have blown away. We know there were higher depths than seven inches and the drifts were much deeper.

The snow resulted in slowed travel, caused some inconveniences, closed schools and cancelled some events and church services. However, when compared to the ice storm and power outage of late January and early February of 2009, this snow has been a picnic. p>
