WR Council hears end-of-year
fire report, discusses repairs
The Walnut Ridge City Council passed a budget cleanup ordinance to close out the calendar year from Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2009, at their regular meeting on Jan. 12.
Also during the meeting, Walnut Ridge Fire Chief Alan Haskins gave an end of the year report for the fire department. He told the council that firemen made 561 runs in 2009 with a total estimated dollar loss of $352,800. Department members completed a total of 1,278 training hours certified by the Arkansas Fire Academy.
"We completed 239 biannual business preplan inspections and 275 biannual hydrant tests," Haskins said. "We also lowered the ISO rating in Walnut Ridge and College City to a Class 4 from a Class 5."
Permits and inspections for 2009 included 22 building permits, 26 HVAC, 31 electrical and 38 plumbing.
Alderwoman Paula Haskins told the council that she has received several complaints about the condition of the interior of the Walnut Ridge Community Center.
"The ceiling needs repaired, the carpet and seats in the auditorium are dirty and the gym also needs work," Haskins said.
Mayor Michelle Rogers told the council that she would talk to Lawrence County School District Supt. Terry Belcher and they would check into the matter.
"The school and the city split the expenses of the community center," she said. "New curtains for the stage in the auditorium were very expensive, and the roof was repainted this past summer."
She also noted that streetlight repairs are also underway in Walnut Ridge and College City. Approximately 20 lights have been repaired, with around 30 more still needing work.
