Cold blast hits county

Lawrence County has felt the effects of an arctic high-pressure front, which kept temperatures well below normal for more than a week. Ten days of below freezing weather has set no records but temperatures in the single digits were close to record lows set in 1997 and 1999.
After schools were closed in the western part of the county on Jan. 4 and 5 due to icy road conditions, a second round of ice and snow developed on Wednesday evening resulting in countywide school closings on Thursday and Friday.
