WBC Tourney underwayNathan HibbardStaff Writer The 50th annual Williams Baptist College Tournament got underway Saturday with six first-round games.
The 10th-seeded Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles outlasted the seventh-seeded Hoxie Lady Mustangs in a barnburner 54-52. The teams were evenly matched from the outset, with Hoxie holding slim leads of 12-10 after one quarter and 24-21 at halftime. Hillcrest outscored the Lady Mustangs 15-8 in the third period to take a 36-32 lead into the fourth quarter. The Lady Eagles held off the Lady Mustangs in the final period to claim the hard-fought victory. Hillcrest advanced to play second-seeded Corning on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. Makenzie Nunnally led Hillcrest with 15 points, while Natalie Johnson and Samantha Blevins each scored 13 points. Stevie Howard finished with seven points, Miranda Doyle scored four, and Katelyn Hammock added two points for the Lady Eagles. Hoxie's Tanya Sisco led all scorers with 18 points. Autumn Nelson had nine points. Karina Mashburn and Chasity Becker each added six points, and Cayley Rosson scored five. Neely Ragsdell and Kelsey Lewis each had four points, and Alyssa McConnell grabbed five rebounds for the Lady Mustangs.
The eighth-seeded Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats earned a narrow 46-43 win over the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs, the No. 9 seed. Alivia Hackworth led the Lady Cats with 15 points, while Ashley Baker scored 14. Walnut Ridge was to play top-seeded Pocahontas Tuesday night.
The Southside Lady Southerners, the fifth seed, defeated 12th-seeded Sloan-Hendrix 66-27. Whitney Gray scored nine points to lead the Lady Greyhounds. Southside was to play Black Rock on Tuesday.
In the first boys game of the tourney, Bennett Dudley scored 19 points to lead the 10th-seeded Walnut Ridge Bobcats to a 37-36 win over seventh-seeded Southside. Chris Dickson added 12 points for the Bobcats. Walnut Ridge was to play second-seeded Black Rock on Tuesday night.
The fourth-seeded Marmaduke Greyhounds defeated 13th-seeded Sloan-Hendrix 65-39. Marmaduke will play Pocahontas on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
In the day's final game, the sixth-seeded Riverside Rebels defeated 11th-seeded Corning 63-42. Jake Love led Riverside with 22 points. Riverside was to play third-seeded Hillcrest on Tuesday.
