Hoxie football team
ends season with loss
The Harrisburg Hornets claimed a share of the 3A-3 conference championship with a 39-12 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs Friday night at Crider Field.
Harrisburg jumped out to an early lead, with two first-quarter touchdowns. Joe Bornhoft scored on a five-yard run with 4:38 to play in the quarter, and quarterback Zach Davis passed nine yards to Turner Norsworthy for another score with 22 seconds remaining. Harrisburg converted a pair of two-point attempts and held a 16-0 lead at the end of the opening period.
Hoxie cut the Hornets' lead to 16-6 in the second quarter, when Jeremy Anglin connected with Jonathan Quesada on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 10:09 to play before halftime. The conversion attempt was no good.
Harrisburg answered quickly, as Bornhoft scored on a 66-yard run to extend the Hornets' lead to 22-6.
Following a Mustang fumble, Mason Costner scored from a yard out and Davis passed to Zac Combs for the two-point conversion to give the Hornets a 30-6 lead with 2:25 to play in the quarter.
Harrisburg recovered a Hoxie fumble on the ensuing kickoff to gain possession at midfield. The Hornets' drive was capped by a 16-yard pass from Davis to Jake Streeter, as Harrisburg took a commanding 36-6 lead into halftime.
The only points of the third quarter came on a 34-yard field goal by Harrisburg's Streeter with 4:45 to play in the period, pushing the lead to 39-6.
Hoxie closed the scoring with a one-yard run by Tyler Clement with 10:35 to play in the game.
Clement led the Mustang ground game with 32 yards on four carries. Blake Snow had 13 yards on eight carries. Devin Roberts added nine yards on four attempts, and Anglin had six yards on eight carries. Colton Bennett carried twice for two yards, and Dillon Williamson had one yard on three carries.
Anglin completed seven-of-11 passes for 68 yards.
Quesada caught four passes for 45 yards. Kenny Mashburn had two receptions for nine yards, and Austin Anglin caught one pass for 14 yards.
Quesada led the Mustang defense with 17 tackles. Thomas Kingsland and Snow each had 12 tackles.
Hoxie finishes the 2009 season with a 4-6 overall record and a 3-4 record in 3A-3 conference play.
