Mustangs come up
short against Cave City
A pair of second-half touchdowns lifted the Cave City Cavemen past Hoxie 14-7 in 3A-3 football Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie scored the only points of the first half on a 17-yard run by Blake Snow in the first quarter. Jeremy Anglin added the extra-point, as the Mustangs carried a 7-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hoxie's lead stood until late into the third quarter, when Cave City quarterback Dalton Carpenter passed 21 yards to Thamail Morgan for a Cavemen touchdown. Morgan ran in the two-point conversion to give Cave City an 8-7 lead with 3:25 to play in the period.
Carpenter added to the Cavemen's lead with a three-yard run with 9:36 to play in the game. The extra-point attempt was no good, as 14-7 would prove to be the final score.
"Once again we led one of the top-ranked teams in the state at halftime and couldn't finish, but I was proud of our effort," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears. "We have to regroup and play always-tough Harrisburg on Thursday."
For Hoxie, Sebastian Irvin had 66 yards rushing on four carries. Dillon Williamson added 65 yards on 16 attempts. Snow finished with 30 yards on nine carries.
Anglin had one pass completion for 43 yards to Jonathan Quesada.
Snow led the Mustangs defense with 15 tackles. Tyler Hall and Thomas Kingsland each had 12 tackles, and Colton Bennett had 10.
Hoxie hosts Harrisburg, the fifth-ranked team in 3A, for Senior Night on Thursday at Crider Field. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
