Hillcrest ladies drop close game
Weiner's Jordan Griffin hit a lay-up with one second remaining to lift the Lady Cardinal's to a 65-64 victory over Hillcrest in senior girls basketball Friday night at Weiner. The game was close throughout.
The Lady Screamin' Eagles were hampered by foul troubles, turnovers and missed opportunities, according to coach Shawn Rose.
Natalie Johnson led Hillcrest with 17 points and four steals before fouling out. Samantha Blevins added 13, including the tying basket with 20 seconds left. Tamara Evans had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Hillcrest junior high girls overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Weiner 47-40.
Lindsey Crews led Hillcrest with 21 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Shae Durham added 15 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Hillcrest senior girls opened the 2009-10 season with a 52-23 rout of Twin Rivers on Oct. 20 at Strawberry.
Blevins scored 14 points, gathered four rebounds and had three steals. Mackenzie Nunnally added 10 points and six boards. Evans scooped up eight rebounds and had four assists to go along with her seven points. Johnson tallied six points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ten different players scored for Hillcrest.
Hillcrest won the junior girls game 39-5. Crews led the junior Lady Eagles with nine points.
Maynard scorched the nets for 30 points in the second and third quarters en route to defeating Hillcrest 46-19 in junior high girls action on Oct. 19.
"Turnovers, missed lay-ups and more turnovers were critical for us," said coach Rose.
Durham led Hillcrest with nine points.
Makenly Coles scored the winning basket in overtime, as Hillcrest defeated Maynard 16-14 in a junior girls B game. Natalie Glenn scored six points to lead the winners.
