Mustangs drop game to EarleNathan Hibbard
The Earle Bulldogs scored 30 unanswered points en route to a 30-22 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs in 3A-3 conference football action Friday night at Earle.
Hoxie broke on top on a two-yard touchdown run by Sebastian Irvin late in the first quarter. Jeremy Anglin kicked the PAT to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
The Mustangs added to their lead when Anglin tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chris Montelongo. Anglin added the PAT, as Hoxie took a 14-0 lead with 8:19 to play in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs began their comeback with a one-yard run and two-point conversion with 3:05 to play in the first half, cutting Hoxie's lead to 14-8 at halftime.
Earle tied the game on another one-yard run with 2:58 to play in the third quarter. The conversion attempt was no good, leaving the teams knotted at 14-14.
Earle took the lead on a 20-yard run with 16 seconds to play in the period. The two-point conversion gave the Bulldogs a 22-14 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 30-14 with another short scoring run and two-point conversion with 8:16 to play in the game.
Hoxie would fight back to make a game of it, as Dillon Williamson scored from a yard out with 5:05 to play. Anglin passed to Jonathan Quesada for the two-point conversion to pull the Mustangs to within 30-22.
"I was very proud of our effort Friday night. Our kids battled to the end," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears. "Give Earle credit. They have a good football team and made big plays when the had to."
Irvin led the Mustangs in rushing with 87 yards on 19 attempts. Williamson added 68 yards on 22 carries. Anglin had 17 yards on seven carries, and Blake Snow carried once for a yard.
Anglin completed three-of-seven passes for 65 yards.
Quesada had one reception for 55 yards. Montelongo caught one pass for 10 yards, and Snow had one reception.
Defensively, Hoxie was led by Snow with 24 tackles and Tyler Hall with 16 tackles. Kyle Boyd and Irvin had 11 tackles apiece. Ryan Troutman and Tyler McCarroll each had eight tackles.
Hoxie is now 3-4 in conference play and 4-4 overall. The Mustangs host conference co-leader Cave City on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest. A chili cook-off, sponsored by the Hoxie TOUCHDOWN Club, begins at 5 p.m.
