Mustangs fall to Rivercrest
The Hoxie Mustangs fell behind Rivercrest early en route to dropping a 30-13 decision to the Colts in 3A-3 conference football action Friday night at Wilson.
Rivercrest's Terence Banks scored on a seven-yard run less than a minute into the game. The extra point gave the Colts a 7-0 lead with 11:04 to play in the first quarter.
With 3:11 to play in the opening period, Jasper Jackson broke loose for a 63-yard scoring run to put the Colts ahead 14-0.
Rivercrest extended their lead to 20-0 on a nine-yard touchdown run by Demoine Brown with 8:10 to play in the second quarter. The extra point was no good.
The Colts' Tevin Howard booted a 35-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give Rivercrest a 23-0 haltime lead.
The Mustangs fought their way back into the game in the second half. Sebastian Irvin scored on a 23-yard run for Hoxie's first score. Jeremy Anglin's extra point pulled the Mustangs to within 23-7 with 6:55 to play in the third quarter.
Hoxie pulled closer in the fourth period on a six-yard run by Irvin with 5:14 to play in the game. The conversion attempt was no good and the Mustangs trailed 23-13.
Rivercrest put the game away when Blake Coffman hit Brown with a 29-yard scoring pass with 4:23 left in the game.
"It was like the same song, second verse. We had too many mental mistakes and missed opportunities," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears. "I was very proud of how we battled in the second half. We had several chances to get the game to three points and didn't cash in."
Dillon Williamson led Hoxie's running game, with 89 yards on 17 carries. Irvin finished with 84 yards on 27 attempts. Colton Bennett added 31 yards on two carries. Blake Snow gained 18 yards on four attempts, and Anglin had 15 yards on five carries.
Anglin was seven-of-17 passing for 118 yards.
Jonathan Quesada had three receptions for 54 yards. Irvin caught two passes for four yards. Devin Roberts had one catch for 44 yards, and Austin Anglin had one reception for 16 yards.
The Mustangs' defense was led by Chris Montelongo with 15 tackles and a sack. Blake Snow had 11 tackles, while D.J. Kendrick recorded nine. Bennett had nine tackles and a sack. Roberts and Tyler Hall had eight tackles apiece.
The Mustangs are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Hoxie hosts Corning for homecoming on Friday night at Crider Field. Homecoming festivities will start at 7 p.m., with kickoff scheduled for 7:30.
