Gates wins runoff
for Hoxie board

Wesley Gates has won election to the Hoxie School Board in a runoff held Tuesday. Gates received a vote of 167 (58 percent) compared to 123 (42 percent) for Jeffery Moskop.

Chamber of Commerce hears
update on road construction

The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce heard a presentation from Walter McMillan, Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department district engineer, at its quarterly meeting on Sept. 24.

McMillan discussed current and future road construction in Lawrence County.

The first topic discussed was the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. According to McMillan, the act provided funds for the construction and maintenance of bridges and highways. District 10, which includes Clay, Craighead, Greene, Lawrence, Mississippi, Poinsett and Randolph counties, designated $5 million for rehab projects.

LHS finances reviewed,
Foundation plans gala

The Board of Governors for Lawrence Hall Nursing Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital learned that finances are still tight for Lawrence Health Services during a board meeting on Sept. 28.

Dates set for local cleanups

Lawrence County has Class IV dumpsters available this week, and several Lawrence County communities have announced dates for their fall cleanups.
