Mustangs stomp Manila, 42-6
The Hoxie Mustangs opened 3A-3 conference play with a convincing 42-6 win over the Manila Lions Friday night at Manila.
Dillon Williamson recorded Hoxie's first score on a touchdown run with 5:04 to play in the first quarter. Jeremy Anglin kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Devin Roberts gave the Mustangs a 13-0 lead with a touchdown run with two minutes to play in the opening period. The conversion attempt was no good.
Williamson ran for another touchdown in the second quarter. Anglin ran for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 21-0 lead.
Williamson ran for his third touchdown of the game at the 3:51 mark of the second period. Anglin kicked the PAT for a 28-0 Hoxie advantage.
Manila scored their only points on a pass play with 49 seconds to play in the first half. The conversion failed, as the Mustangs took a 28-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Anglin ran for a touchdown with 11:46 to play in the third period. He then kicked the extra point for a 35-6 Hoxie lead.
Anglin added his second rushing touchdown with 6:59 to play in the game. His extra point provided the Mustangs with their final point.
"I was proud of the way the team responded after last week's tough loss. We still have areas to improve on, but we are getting better each week," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears.
Offensively for Hoxie, Williamson finished with 82 yards rushing on 16 attempts. Blake Snow had 57 yards on eight carries, and Anglin had 51 yards on seven carries. Colton Bennett rushed four times for 22 yards, and Roberts added 21 yards on six carries.
Anglin completed three-of-10 passes, for 94 yards.
Jonathan Quesada had one reception for 54 yards. Austin Anglin caught one pass for 36 yards, and Snow had one reception for four yards.
Defensively, Joe Gage led the Mustangs with 11 tackles and had one interception. Chris Montelongo had 10 tackles, an interception and a sack. Snow recorded nine tackles. Tyler Hall and Quesada each had seven tackles, while Kyle Boyd had seven tackles and a sack. Tyler Henson and Thomas Kingsland each had a sack.
The Sports Max players of the week are Williamson on offense, Gage on defense and Jeremy Anglin on special teams.
Hoxie travels to Wilson on Friday to face the Rivercrest Colts. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
