Cats defeat Cedar Ridge
Walnut Ridge quarterback Luke Holloway had three touchdown passes to lead the Bobcats to a 28-6 victory over conference foe Cedar Ridge Friday night.
Holloway hit Logan Gaither for a 20-yard score, then connected with Gaither again on the two-point conversion to give Walnut Ridge an 8-0 lead with 21 seconds to play in the opening quarter.
Cedar Ridge put together their only scoring drive of the game early in the second period to close to within 8-6 with 8:12 remaining in the half.
On Walnut Ridge's ensuing possession, Holloway found Derek Medlock on a 52-yard touchdown pass. The conversion was no good, leaving the Bobcats with a 14-6 lead.
The Bobcats' defense came up with the game's next big play. With Cedar Ridge driving deep into Walnut Ridge territory, Bennett Dudley picked off a Timberwolves' pass and returned it 83 yard for a touchdown. The conversion failed, as the Bobcats took a 20-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Walnut Ridge's final points came late in the third quarter, when Holloway passed to Gaither for a 24-yard touchdown with 45 seconds to play in the period. Holloway passed to Medlock for the two-point conversion to set the final score.
"I was proud of the way our team came out and executed in some critical situations," said Walnut Ridge head coach Larry Treadway. "We started off the conference season with a win, but we have to continue to improve, because the schedule doesn't get any easier."
Walnut Ridge improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in 2A-3 conference play. The Bobcats host Cross County on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
