Cave City used a strong second half to break open a close game and hand the Walnut Ridge Bobcats a 35-6 defeat in the first game of the senior high football season Friday night at Sexton Field.

"They physically wore us down," said Walnut Ridge head coach Larry Treadway. "We were able to hang in there with them for nearly three quarters, but we ran out of gas."

After a scoreless first quarter, during which both defenses played well, Cave City tallied the game's first points on a 15-yard run with 4:34 to play in the first half. The two-point conversion gave the Cavemen an 8-0 halftime lead.

Cave City received the second-half kickoff and engineered a time-consuming drive that culminated with a touchdown with just 3:55 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT attempt was no good.

On the following Walnut Ridge possession, the Cavemen defense intercepted a Luke Holloway pass and returned it for a touchdown. The PAT was good, giving Cave City a 21-0 lead with 2:53 to play in the third quarter.

The Cavemen put the game away with touchdowns at the 11:10 and 6:28 marks of the fourth quarter. Both PATs were good, for a 35-0 advantage.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard when Holloway hit Heath Kennedy on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 to play in the game.

"They have a good team," added Treadway. "Playing better competition will make us better in the long run."

Holloway completed 14-of-24 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Logan Gaither led the Cats with 10 tackles, followed by Bennett Dudley and Thomas Witt, with eight tackles apiece.

Walnut Ridge opens conference play on Friday at Cedar Ridge. Game time is 7 p.m.
