WR teams post scrimmage wins
Walnut Ridge quarterback Luke Holloway connected with Logan Gaither on a successful two-point conversion attempt to lift the Bobcats to an 8-7 win over Westside in a senior high football scrimmage on Aug. 25 at Jonesboro.
The game-winning conversion followed a two-yard scoring run by the Bobcats' Preston Matthews, which pulled Walnut Ridge to within 7-6 with 1:05 to play in the game.
The Bobcats took the opening kickoff and drove to the Westside five-yard line before the Warriors' defense stiffened.
Westside took their first drive inside the Walnut Ridge 20-yard line, but Gaither intercepted a fourth-down pass in the end zone to stop the drive.
Walnut Ridge fumbled on their next possession in Westside territory, but the Bobcats' defense held Westside and forced a turnover on downs, as the teams went to halftime in a scoreless tie.
Westide put together a 12-play, 70-yard drive to start the third quarter that was capped by a seven-yard run by Tyler Hibbs. The point-after was good, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead.
Westside held the lead until late in the fourth quarter. The Warriors tried to put the game out of reach with a 35-yard field goal attempt with just over three minutes to play. However, the kick came up well short and Walnut Ridge took possession inside it's own 15-yard line, for what would prove to be the game-winning drive.
The drive included a 50-yard pass play from Holloway to Gaither and a 35-yard completion to Bennett Dudley to set up Matthews' touchdown run and the ensuing conversion.
Holloway passed for 106 yards. Gaither had 75 yards receiving on three catches.
Walnut Ridge opens the regular season on Friday, when they host Cave City at Sexton Field. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Walnut Ridge's junior high football team dominated its scrimmage against the Westside juniors earlier in the evening, outscoring the junior Warriors 36-0.
Eric Wilcoxson, Payton Poole, Hunter Yates, Katun Dodd and Cole Hicks all had touchdown runs for Walnut Ridge. Hicks also had a pair of two-point conversion receptions, and Gage Ditto ran in a two-point conversion.
Yates finished with 132 yards rushing on six carries. Wilcoxson had 114 yards on 12 carries, and Dodd added 38 yards on five attempts.
On defense, Austin Davis recovered two fumbles.
The junior Bobcats open the regular season on Thursday, when they host Cedar Ridge at Sexton Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
