Dog issues continue in Walnut Ridge

A Walnut Ridge man escaped with only minor injuries and torn clothing after being attacked by two pit bull dogs on Monday morning. The attack occurred on Southwest Second Street, behind the Alamo Court.

Neil Fears was picking up trash out of a ditch before mowing it when two pit bull dogs owned by Justin Shoenfeld ran out the door of a nearby house and attacked him.

First day school enrollment
numbers see slight decline

Countywide school enrollment is showing a slight decline with a total of 3,102 students enrolled on the first day of school. Last year's total was 3,112. Three schools showed an increase in students.

Crisler wins photo contest

Justin Ryan Crisler of Hoxie has won best of show honor in The Times Dispatch's annual Summertime Photo Contest with a photo that also won first place in the Expressions of Summer category.

Phone call elicits WWII memories

Many years have passed, but a recent phone call from Belgium brought back many vivid World War II memories for veteran William R. "Bill" Ellis of Walnut Ridge. Ellis, one of a dwindling number of World War II veterans, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Thursday, Aug. 27.
