Hoxie hosts football tourney
Fourteen teams representing 12 Northeast Arkansas high schools competed in the Save-A-Lot "Beast of the East" 7-on-7 football tournament hosted by Hoxie High School on Saturday. The teams were divided into two pools, with the winner of each pool advancing to the championship. In Pool A, Marion finished with a record of 4-2-1 to edge Forrest City, which finished at 4-2. Host Hoxie and Valley View each posted records of 3-2-1, followed by Blytheville at 3-3, Batesville Southside at 2-4 and Jonesboro JV at 1-5. Paragould won Pool B with a perfect 7-0 record. Mountain Home was second, with a record of 5-1. Jonesboro, Nettleton and DeWitt each finished 3-3, followed by Gosnell at 1-5 and Hoxie JV at 0-6. Paragould defeated Marion 14-9 in the championship game. "We had a very competitive tournament. Pool play came down to the last game to see who would make the championship," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears. "It was great to see so many people come out on a beautiful day. We hope to make next year's tournament even bigger and better. We want to have the best tournament on our side of the state."
