Sports Scene | Education | Viewpoints | Records | POWERFUL WINDS BRING MUCH NEEDED RAIN ~ A storm system that blew through the area around midnight Saturday brought much-needed rains to Lawrence County. Totals varied greatly from over one inch to over three inches. Winds caused some minor damage and were strong enough to blow this grain bin across County Road 414 in Walnut Ridge into the middle of a field. The bin, no longer in use, belongs to Billy Ray James of Pocahontas. Located further beyond the field is the Williams Baptist College baseball field. Paige VanBrook of the Lawrence County Communications Center said there were no reports of any major damage. Imboden man sentenced to 25 years in wife's death A Lawrence County man was sentenced to 25 years at the Arkansas Department of Correction on Friday in connection with the death of his wife in July of 2008. continued... Airport, golf club still working to find solution At its regular meeting on Monday night, the Walnut Ridge Airport Commission spoke with a country club member to discuss the Notice of Appeal and Designation of Record filed by the club's attorney on July 2. continued... Archives facility construction set Lloyd Clark, president of the Lawrence County Historical Society, has given an update on plans for a new building to house historical records at the Powhatan Historic State Park. He was guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Walnut Ridge. continued... Hoxie to purchase fire truck The City of Hoxie will receive $50,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase a fire truck. continued...
