PICNIC MARKS FOURTH ~ Abigail Brown (front), four, and Cailyn Brown, five, daughters of Allan and Jenny Brown of Walnut Ridge, enjoy the motorcycle ride at the Portia Picnic on Saturday. The annual picnic was one of several celebrations held throughout the county to mark Independence Day. Fireworks displays in Walnut Ridge and Hoxie were also held over the weekend.

Golf club
files appeal
After the Walnut Ridge Golf Club and the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport Commission appeared to have reached an agreement to settle their two-year battle over the airport's safety zones, negotiations between them apparently broke down last week. The golf club's attorney, C.W. Knauts, filed a Notice of Appeal and Designation of Record on their behalf on Thursday.

WRFD receives honors
The Walnut Ridge Fire Department received two awards during the annual Arkansas State Firefighters and Fire Chiefs Convention on June 27 in Hot Springs.

May enjoyed time with Extension
Martha May's work with the University of Arkansas Extension Service began in 1978 in Booneville and ended June 30 when she retired as staff chair of the Lawrence County office.

Members of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce heard an update on the formation of the Northeast Arkansas Regional Water Authority at the Chamber's quarterly meeting on Thursday.
