WRFD applies for
renovation grant

The Walnut Ridge Fire Department has applied for an Assistance to Firefighters Fire Station Construction Grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The grant is part of President Obama's stimulus money earmarked for construction or renovation purposes.

"This is the first time this grant has been available," said Walnut Ridge Fire Chief Alan Haskins. "The grant money has to be used for new construction or renovations to existing fire stations."

Haskins said if they receive the grant, the money will be used for paving in front of the fire station's bay doors and to add an additional bay on the west end of the building.

"We need the extra bay for our HazMat trailer," Haskins said. "It is currently being kept at the fire station near the airport where there is room to keep it inside. The new bay would allow us to keep the trailer at our main fire station."

According to Haskins, the grant they are applying for will total a little over $140,000.
