Funding approved for
work on local highway

The Arkansas Highway Department has approved $32,200,000 for work on the Highway 67 corridor from Highway 230 in the Alicia area to Highway 63 in Hoxie.

A contract for laying the roadbed, setting culverts and building bridges on the 9.89-mile stretch will be let in May.

Joe Barnett, district highway engineer for the Arkansas Highway Department, said that once the work is completed they hope to be able to open bids for paving that section of highway.

"This progress is going to tie everything together," he said. "It's another step in the plan to tie Newport to Walnut Ridge."

In addition to the work on Highway 67 work is also planned on Highway 412 (Main Street) in Walnut Ridge. A quarter mile of road from the railroad tracks to the courthouse will have the top layer of asphalt removed and the road will be resurfaced.

The money for these projects comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law on Feb. 17. The Arkansas Highway Department has received $351.5 million for infrastructure projects in the state.
