Hillcrest boys post two wins

Nathan Hibbard
Staff Writer

A five-run seventh inning broke open a close game and lifted the Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles to an 8-1 win in high school baseball action at Viola on Thursday.

Trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, Hillcrest's Dylan Wooten was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Following an infield single by Marcus Huskey, Derek Wooten hit a three-run home run to put the Eagles in front 3-1.

Viola threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Hillcrest pitcher Michael Spain struck out two Longhorn batters with runners on second and third to end the threat.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the seventh, when Hillcrest struck for five runs to put the game out of reach. The key hit of the inning was Derek Wooten's second three-run homer of the game.

Also for Hillcrest, Huskey batted 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Dylan Wooten and Tyler Parker each had a double. Jordan Hunter had two hits, and Kyle Bristow recorded one hit.

Spain pitched a complete game on the mound. He allowed one run on three hits, with nine strikeouts and one walk.

The Screamin' Eagles improved to 9-2 overall with the win.

Mammoth Spring

The Eagles traveled to Mammoth Spring on March 23 and posted a 12-5 conference victory over the Bears.

Derek Wooten started on the mound for Hillcrest and allowed one run on two hits in four innings of work. Dylan Wooten relieved in the fifth and allowed four runs on two hits. Mammoth Spring was able to take advantage of some Hillcrest defensive miscues and scored three unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the Eagles' lead to 8-4.

Hillcrest added four runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 12-4 before the Bears added a final run in the bottom of the inning.

Dylan Wooten led Hillcrest at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and scored three runs. Huskey went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hunter and Bristow each had two hits and an RBI. Taylor Neeley had a double and scored twice, and Trevor Morgan had an RBI and scored two runs.

Hillcrest improved to 3-0 in 1A-2 West conference play.
