Additional funding needed
Children's Shelter Administrator Amber Hampton spoke Tuesday with the Rotary Club of Lawrence County about the shelter's needs and goals. During her presentation, Hampton displayed one of the shelter's personal hygiene boxes.
The Children's Shelter in Walnut Ridge must jump a final hurdle before it is able to begin housing children.
State licensing requirements will not allow the shelter to open until the board has acquired enough funds to operate for one year, which is estimated at $239,000. Administrator Amber Hampton said presenting proof of income is the shelter's main focus at this time.
The children who will be housed 12 at a time in the shelter will receive care from an active staff 24-hours a day. A bulk of the shelter's operating budget will be designated for employing the staff.
Hampton said some donated funds have been used for incorporation fees, property taxes and demolishing and clearing land, but the shelter has two-thirds of the first year's budget at this time.
The shelter is continuing to accept donations and pledges.
"We need continued support from the community," said Hampton.
