Farmers' market plannedThe Downtown Walnut Ridge organization is finalizing plans for its farmers' market, which will begin on April 11.
The group began hosting a farmers' market last year, and this will be the first full year for the event, which will run through mid-fall. The market will be open each Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. and will be located next to Wolf's Tae Kwon Do, across from the Lawrence County Courthouse in Walnut Ridge.
Vendors are encouraged to take advantage of the free spaces being offered for the 2009 season. Spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Downtown Walnut Ridge board member Cathy Harthorn said the committee felt with this being the first full year, it would be a good idea to offer spaces for free to help get the market established.
Vendors can sell home-grown or home-produced vegetables, fruits, honey, molasses, jams, jellies, pickles, nuts, cut flowers, plants and other such products.
Produce should be grown within a 100-mile radius of Walnut Ridge or within the state of Arkansas. Anyone selling produce they did not grow or non-local goods is required to label them as such.
A planning meeting will be held April 2 at 5:30 at the Electric Avenue Coffee House, across from Walnut Ridge First United Methodist Church. Anyone interested in helping with the organization, promotion or implementation of the market is encouraged to attend.
