Staff Writer The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles' season came to an end Friday with a 68-39 loss to the Kingston Lady Yellow Jackets in the second round of the Class A State Basketball Tournament at Greers Ferry. Kingston led 12-10 after one quarter, but broke the game open in the second period, outscoring Hillcrest 26-7, to take a 38-17 lead into halftime. The Kingston run was sparked by their defense, which forced several Hillcrest turnovers, and some hot three-point shooting. Kingston, the defending Class A state champions, hit 12 three pointers in the game. Tamara Evans led Hillcrest with 10 points and five rebounds. Breanna Doyle added nine points, and Samantha Blevins scored eight. Natalie Johnson finished with seven points, and Lauren Pickle scored three points and pulled down nine rebounds. Miranda Doyle and Katelyn Hammock each scored one point. The Lady Screamin' Eagles end the season with a record of 23 wins and 10 losses.
The Lady Screamin' Eagles staged a furious rally in the final minute of play to edge Caddo Hills 40-39 in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday. Trailing 39-37 with 51 seconds to play, Hillcrest's Blevins stole the ball and scored on a lay-up to tie the game at 39-39. Seconds later, Breanna Doyle made another steal for the Lady Eagles and passed to Johnson, who was fouled with 3.8 seconds to play. Johnson sank one-of-two free-throws to give the Lady Eagles the win. Breanna Doyle led Hillcrest with 20 points and six rebounds, and Johnson added 10 points. Blevins finished with four points. Pickle scored two points and had eight rebounds. Evans had two points and four rebounds, and Miranda Doyle added two points.
