The Lawrence County Children's Shelter held an open house on March 4 from 4-6 p.m. The public was invited to tour the shelter, visit with board members and enjoy refreshments.
Approximately 100 people attended, according to Amber Hampton, shelter administrator. Each of the 10 bedrooms, two social rooms, dining area/common room, four full bathrooms and two half baths were adopted and decorated by individuals, businesses, church groups or organizations. Visitors voted on their favorite rooms by placing money in a small bank provided in each room.
"The Teen Parent Room, which has a twin bed and baby bed and was adopted by Special Things, was the winning room," Hampton said. "The 'Dora the Explorer' Room, adopted by Darrel and Cora Steele, and the boys' bathrooms, adopted by the Walnut Ridge Business and Professional Women, tied for second place."
"We would like to thank everyone who came to the open house and invite everyone who was unable to attend to drop by and see what the shelter is all about," she added.
Board president Judy Turnbull said she felt the open house was great. "We got lots of positive comments about the shelter," she said.
The shelter is a private, non-profit organization that is supported by grants and donations. The projected opening date is May 1. The shelter can accommodate 12 displaced children from Lawrence and surrounding counties until the most suitable relative or foster home is found for them. It is located off West Main Street at 107 Benson Drive.
