Staff Writer Several Lawrence County basketball teams competed in their respective regional tournaments last week.
Saturday The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles defeated Mammoth Spring 49-39 to earn the championship of the 1A Region 2 Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Bay. A closely played first half saw Mammoth Spring hold slim leads of 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and 24-22 at halftime. Hillcrest used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to move out to a 35-26 lead and held off the Lady Bears in the final period to earn the regional title. Hillcrest's Breanna Doyle was named MVP of the tournament. Doyle led the Lady Screamin' Eagles with 13 points, all in the second half. Natalie Johnson added 12 points for Hillcrest. Hillcrest was scheduled to play in the 1A State Tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Caddo Hills. West Side Greers Ferry is hosting the tournament.
The Mammoth Spring Bears claimed the Region's final spot in the 1A State Basketball Tournament with a 40-39 win over Black Rock in the consolation game of the boys bracket Saturday afternoon. The Zebras had a shot for the win, but a contested jumper by J.J. Nunally was off the mark as the buzzer sounded. Black Rock's Les Foster scored a game-high 16 points, and Nunally finished with 10 points.
Hillcrest ~ Viola girls The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles clinched a spot the 1A State Tournament with a 47-41win over Viola in the semifinals on Friday. Doyle and Johnson each scored 18 points to lead Hillcrest.
The host Bay Yellowjackets defeated Black Rock 49-32 in the boys semifinals on Friday. Black Rock led 19-17 at halftime, but the Yellowjackets' defense held the Zebras to five field goals in the second half. Tadd Fore led Black Rock with nine points, while Hunter Horton had 12 rebounds.
Hillcrest ~ BR girls Hillcrest defeated Black Rock 62-51 in the opening round of the girls bracket on Thursday. Doyle led Hillcrest with 19 points, and Johnson had 15. Amy Galbreath scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Lady Zebras. Teri Aden and Ashley Stallings each had 11 points.
The Black Rock boys defeated Hillcrest 70-53 in the first round of the tournament Thursday night. Foster led the Zebras with 20 points. Nunnally and Fore each had 10 points for Black Rock.
Thursday The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats were defeated by Riverside 56-36 in the first round of the Class 2A North Regional Basketball Tournament Thursday at Newark. Alivia Hackworth led Walnut Ridge with 17 points.
The Turrell Rockets defeated the Walnut Ridge senior boys 63-35 in the first round of the regional basketball tournament Thursday night at Newark.
The Hoxie senior boys saw their season end with a 65-54 loss to Mountain View in the first round of the 3A-3 Regional Tournament on Wednesday at Bergman.
