Lady Zebras are
district runners-up

The Black Rock senior high boys and girls basketball teams competed in the 1A-3 East District Tournament last week at Jonesboro.

Weiner's McKenzie Pickle scored with 22 seconds to play, as the Lady Cardinals edged Black Rock 46-45 in the girls championship game on Friday. Trailing entering the fourth quarter, the Lady Zebras went on a 13-3 run to move into a 45-44 lead before Pickle's game-winner.

Amy Galbreath had 17 points, and Hailey Slusser added nine for Black Rock.


The Lady Zebras upset Bay 66-47 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Galbreath scored 29 points to lead the Lady Zebras.

In boys action, Armorel's Markell Selvey scored on a tip-in with less than a second remaining to lift the Tigers to a 66-64 overtime win over Black Rock in the semifinals.

Joe Paul Carey scored 17 points, and J.J. Nunally added 13 for Black Rock.


Both Black Rock teams advanced in the district tournament with wins on Feb. 17.

The Black Rock boys defeated Crowley's Ridge Academy 45-38.

The win clinched a spot in the regional tournament for the Zebras.

Carey led Black Rock with 11 points, and Les Foster had 10.

The Black Rock girls defeated Armorel 46-43.

Teri Aden led the Lady Zebras with 17 points, and Galbreath scored 11.
